Good article on personal SEO and how the author Julia Angwin went about it.

My favorite quote:

“And thus, I learned the final lesson of SEO: Patience is required.”

The murky art of search-engine optimization can surface a person’s better side online with the proper techno-aggrandizing.

MapMyTweeps version 0.2

I halved the average load time by using multi curl to pull data.  10 seconds for the first time user instead of over 20.
I’m satisfied for today.

@Stocktwits and @Shakeshack maps

Here are two well-known (at least based on my friends both on twitter and my off-line friends) brands.

Both @StockTwits and @Shakeshack auto-follow, so it’s a good example of the mapping of their respective followers.

stocktwits map
@stocktwits - strong US following, especially along the East Coast and a good showing in Europe.

shakeshack
@shakeshack – very similar to @stocktwits in the US and Europe, non in South America but 3 in Australia.

I will revisit these maps in 1 months time to see the differences.

Map My Tweeps

Here is my map of my twitter follower and friends

Check out the map of my tweeps.

Map My Tweeps for Lmai US

I’m very concentrated in the US as you can see.
The next photo shows more detail of my follwers and the people I follow.

Map My Tweeps for Lmai US

There’s obvious concentration on the East and West coasts, but there’s an interesting bunching in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Beta Launch of MapMyTweeps

I was interested in seeing the geographical diversity of my Twitter friends and followers.

I finally found this Yahoo Pipe by Andy M called Twitter Friends, but it wasn’t everything I was looking for.

I wanted to combine both on a single map with different colors and also show mutual following relationships.  Google maps provided that flexibility.

Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

MapMyTweeps

Feel free to share them with me.  I would love to see some interesting maps from brands.  You can email them to me at info at ironmonkeyventures.com

SEO Checklist

Short list of things to do for SEO

Content

  1. Provide content, not just links, not just images.
  2. Use meta-data to describe your site and content.
  3. Check for broken links and correct HTML.
  4. Fill in “alt” in your image tags.

Backend

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dashboard – submit/verify your website, create a sitemap

Completing these steps will make sure you get listed on search engines and prepare you for the next steps – marketing and building links.

See Vaughns Google search engine SERP Ranking Factors SEO Checklist for a much more detailed and comprehensive list than what I have here.
Vaughn also lists things to avoid.  Which is just as, if not more, important than things to do.

There are no SEO secrets or shortcuts

I have talked to many small business and website owners who set up a website and wonder why their site is buried several pages deep on search result pages.  They expect someone to get them listed at the top of natural search results within a week.  That might have been possible a few years ago, but not anymore.

Search engines are smart.  They know when you’re trying to dupe them and they don’t like it.  Google has a habit of penalizing websites that break their rules.  They are aware of the link building sites and services.

You business was probably not an overnight success.  You had to market your business and build a customer base.  It’s the same with SEO  – to be listed on page one of search results takes some time and a little effort.

Google’s new tool: insight for search

I used trends and it gave some interesting glimpes into what people were searching for.  Now Google just announced yet another beta product – Insight for Search.

Today, we’re launching Google Insights for Search, a new product designed with the advertiser in mind. It provides more flexibility and functionality for advertisers and marketers to understand search behavior, and adds some cool new features like a world heat map to graphically display search volume and regional interest.”
